Greenway’s Melrose Trading Post is a staunch
supporter of its local community.
Working in tandem with Fairfax High School administration, teachers and parents, Greenway Co-Artistic Directors, Whitney Weston and Pierson Blaetz, envisioned the Melrose Trading Post as a means for the students to make a significant contribution to their own success through raising money for school programs and increasing confidence and self-esteem.
Each week is sponsored by a school club or student organization, which has petitioned The Melrose Trading Post for the opportunity to earn money for activities and purchases not provided for in the school budget. Under the supervision of a core staff of adults, students from that week’s sponsoring club man the gates themselves, working a full day at the market.
Recognized nationally for its multicultural atmosphere and the eclectic nature of both the bargains and its bargain hunters, The Melrose Trading Post has been featured in the "Best of L.A." issues of such publications as Vogue, Sunset Magazine, Jane, Country Home, GQ and Los Angeles Magazine.
Now, here are a few things we bet you didn't know:
Did
you know that the money earned from the early years of the Melrose Trading Post
was used to renovate an old, neglected social hall on the campus of Fairfax
High School. This space was
transformed into what is now the Greenway Court Theatre.
If you're really good - you can furnish an entire house with your finds from the Melrose Trading Post. One very popular TV show proved it!
Melrose Trading Post has been open every Sunday since it's inception.
Two Assistant Managers at Melrose Trading Post
started as FHS student workers and are still with us! Doing a fantastic
job we might add. Can you guess who they are?
The admission hand stamp has changed only twice. Do you know what it used to be?
Whitney Weston and Pierson Blaetz were the very first "food vendors". Whitney cooked up a huge batch of spaghetti, carted it over to the Melrose Trading Post and she and Pierson served dinner for the patrons and vendors! Now that's love!!! By the way, Whitney and Pierson are no longer food vendors.
Ilya our famous "Coffee Guy", was the second food vendor and he's still here. He has great stories to tell. Now can you tell us who became our third food vendor?
Do you know the secret path to navigate the Melrose Trading Post most successfully?
If you love to people watch, the best time to come is 11:30 to 3:00. The Melrose Trading Post is really bustling at that time
Did you know there are over 2000 books available for sale every Sunday?
And, did you know that you can get your aura cleansed at the Melrose Trading Post? Talk about one stop shopping :)
Melrose Trading Post has a very special tradition of honoring those vendors that have passed on. A honor table is set up in their space, with flowers and a framed photo of the vendor. A moment of silence is observed. No one is permitted to use that space on that Sunday. We truly care about our vendors and love the vibrant energy they bring to our space.
Do you know how we celebrate a staff person's birthday? It's pretty cool we must say.
Did you know the original cash box was a fanny pack! And, that all calculations were done by hand! Our founders Whitney and Pierson were truly committed to the mission of helping Fairfax High School.
There are a handful of vendors that have been with us since day one! Can you guess who?
And did you know that your admission fee helps to fund student programs at Fairfax High School?
